Simon Brown papers, 1796-1872 (bulk 1834-1872).

Records consist of scrapbooks and sketches in ink. Scrapbooks include: one v. including clippings 1796-1843 (bulk 1838-1843) on misc. topics, particularly American history, politics, and government; one v. containing printed receipt forms for use by the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives (thirteen receipts actually used, their stubs dated Apr. 1-June 2, 1834), the unused portion recycled by Brown as a scrapbook on political topics but most of the clippings. (Cont.) subsequently removed, Brown's ms. annotations remaining (the date span of the material originally contained within apparently 1838-1844); one v. containing primarily political clippings 1837-1846; one v. containing clippings describing places (many in New England, some elsewhere in U.S. and abroad) and some engraved ill., the dated items from 1834 to 1866; one 2 v. set containing clippings on agriculture and livestock, especially in New England, the bulk 1847-1872, each v. including a ms. index by Brown. (Cont.) one v. (entitled Sheep) with clippings 1856-1866, ALS (J.B. Proctor to Messrs. R.P. Eaton and Co., Dec. 11, 1865), and ms. index; one v. (entitled Seasons) containing clippings 1857-1872; one 12 v. series of scrapbooks (labelled Editorials), 1861-1868 and 1872, containing clippings from the New England farmer. (Cont.) Sketches include sixteen varnished sketches in ink, on cloth, of farm implements, ten of the sketches numbered 1-10, the remaining unnumbered, all attributed to Simon Brown. The attribution is supported by the handwriting in a pencilled caption on one of the sketches and by a piece by J. Reynolds on p. 197 of the Apr. 1853 issue of New England farmer describing a presentation on the history of farm implements given by Brown before the Concord Farmers' Club Feb. 24, 1853, and referring to ten plates prepared by Brown for the occasion.
